Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched a comprehensive 35-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match number 41 of IPL 2024. The outcome marked RCB’s only second win of the year, and their first after six winless attempts since the past one month.

After the match, winning skipper Faf du Plessis spoke about the significance of the result and reflected his team’s mindset over the course of the past couple of weeks.

RCB overcame an all-firing SRH unit at the latter’s home ground at Hyderabad to notch up their first win after six failed attempts in this 17th edition of IPL.

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, RCB captain Faf du Plessis exemplified the importance of the win for the ‘confidence’ of his players, and implied that a positive result was overdue after their close defeats in recent games. He said:

“I forgot the way to the presentation party. Every time, I was walking off the field straightaway. We have been closer in many games but haven't been able to cross the victory line. The SRH game was 270+, and we got to 260, then the KKR game as well, just one run. We've been close for a while but you need to win matches to get confidence in the group. It was a massive win for us. When you're not winning, it affects you mentally and your confidence. I will sleep a little bit easier tonight.”

Faf du Plessis further claimed that his RCB troops have been training hard over the past week and a half, and he praised Rajat Patidar’s successive half-centuries and Cameron Green’s all-round diligence in the build-up of the latest result. He added:

“You can't fake confidence in a group, and neither can you talk confidence to a group. The only way to bring confidence is by performing. Over the last week and a half, we have been working hard to improve our game. Rajat's back-to-back fifties will be great for him. Green is playing well, and tonight's performance will be massive for him. It's never going to be just one guy getting the runs.”

The South African-based RCB skipper also acknowledged his team’s recent struggles at their home ground at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, considering they have managed to secure just one win at the venue in four attempts this IPL 2024 season. The cricketer added that while the recent results have been tough for his troops, he did praise leg-spinner Karn Sharma for his consistent performance off late.

“Obviously, we know that the Chinnaswamy has been disappointing for us. We are trying to find a recipe where we feel like we can bowl at that ground. And it's been tough for the guys to find a formula. A leg-spinner (Karn Sharma), even more so now, you have to have a leg-spinner in your team.”

Faf du Plessis will now lead his RCB cohorts against Gujarat Titans in match number 45 of the IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited contest is set to be staged on April 28 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

A win over Gujarat Titans might help RCB lift themselves from the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table.
