Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag was grieved at the sight of a nerve-wracking 1-run loss against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens today. Despite scoring a career-best 95 (45), Parag witnessed him team failing to seal a 207-run chase by the closest of margin.

One of the two teams to have been eliminated from the playoffs race even before their recently concluded match, a cliffhanger finish brought Rajasthan their ninth loss of the season – seventh across the last eight matches.

“It feels absolutely awful giving an interview here [referring to the position for the losing captain], but it's just how the game is. You've got to be clinical. You've got to be perfect,” Parag told streaming platform JioHotstar.

Riyan Parag Takes Blame For Loss

Leading for the first time in an Indian Premier League season, the 23-year-old player spoke like a true leader whilst taking responsibility for the loss. Coming in to bat at No. 4 in just the second over, Parag hit six fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 211.11 before getting out in the 18th over.

With RR needing 34 runs off 14 balls at the time of his dismissal, Parag rued scoring only 14 runs across the 16th and 17th overs. The brief phase proved to be a game-changing one especially after he had smacked five sixes in a Moeen Ali over. All in all, the visitors managed 19/2 between overs 16-18 to lack behind in Kolkata on Sunday.

“I was planning to stay till the last two overs, but unfortunately, I got out in the 18th over. It was a miscalculation from my side. I think I did it pretty well, until the time I got out,” Parag added.

Scheduled to experience the luxury of a rare one-week rest, Royals will next face Chennai Super Kings on May 12 before hosting Punjab Kings in Jaipur on May 16. It is needless to say that the franchise would look to hand opportunities to reserve players in the remaining two matches.
