Former Australia wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist has singled out former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene as the chief reason behind Mumbai Indians’ Indian Premier League 2025 domination. As things stand, MI have won six out of 10 league matches to be at the third position on the points table.
While former India spinner Murali Kartik considered the franchise’s prototypical match-winners responsible for a turnaround during an appearance on Cricbuzz, Gilchrist highlighted how the return of their former head coach has worked wonders for them.
“The re-addition of Mahela Jayawardene as [head] coach. He knows success. He knows some of that success of having been down and out and then rebounding. All the ingredients for the recipe are there. Looking good,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Mahela Jayawardene Returned Ahead Of IPL 2025
Jayawardene, who coached Mumbai to three IPL titles between 2017-2022, was promoted as the franchise’s global head of performance. Responsible for managing Indians in International League T20, SA20 and Major League Cricket, Jayawardene was replaced by former South Africa wicket-keeper batter Mark Boucher at Mumbai.
While the franchise qualified for the playoffs under Rohit Sharma in 2023, they finished at the bottom of the points table under Hardik Pandya last year.
Having commenced the ongoing season with a couple of losses away from home, MI had won just once across the first five attempts. However, since then, they have won five matches in a row. Currently facing Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, a sixth consecutive victory could power them to the top of the points table.
For the unversed, Jayawardene’s forte lies in converting dead IPL campaigns into title-winning ones. A franchise known to start slow, Indians are used to coming back incredibly stronger in the business end of the tournament.
