Akash Deep, who missed the Duleep Trophy due to an impact injury sustained in the final Test against England at The Oval, is set to return to bowling from Sunday. The Bengal fast bowler confirmed that his body has healed after the gruelling tour of England, where his match-winning 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston became a career highlight.

Akash Deep On Injury break and recovery

Speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s annual awards ceremony, where he was felicitated by Sourav Ganguly, the speedster explained the reason for his short layoff.

“There was no injury, just an impact. I will start bowling tomorrow. I’m feeling good. I have been playing constantly for six months, so the body needed a bit of rest,” Akash Deep told reporters.

The 27-year-old highlighted the physical and mental demands of overseas tours. “When you go to England or Australia, it’s tough to play five matches. You have to be mentally and physically stronger,” he added.

Akash Deep Reflects On England tour heroics

During the five-Test series, Akash Deep bowled 109.1 overs across three matches, bagging 13 wickets, including his 10-for in Birmingham. His gritty 66 runs at The Oval also proved crucial in India’s thrilling six-run victory that helped level the series 2-2.

Reflecting on the milestone, he remarked, “I never thought of taking 10 wickets when I was picked. I just had to bowl in my areas and stick to my discipline. Some days you get results, some days you don’t. That day it was mine. But the bigger thing was that the team won after I took 10 wickets—that was the greater achievement.”

When asked about workload management, especially in light of Jasprit Bumrah featuring in only three of the five Tests, Akash Deep chose to stay diplomatic.

“It’s not in my hands. It depends on the team staff and physios, they manage these things. It’s a team game. Whoever gets to play is focused on winning the match,” he said.

Deep Shares Future Goals

While his batting cameo at The Oval drew attention, the Bengal pacer insisted that bowling remains his primary role.

“If the team needs my batting, I will bat. My dream is to bring my best version and improve myself so that I can play across formats. But the 66 at The Oval was important—I would always like to win the match with my bowling,” he clarified.

Akash Deep, who hails from Sasaram in Bihar, now looks forward to regaining full rhythm in the nets ahead of India’s upcoming Test series against the West Indies, where he will be a strong contender for selection if fully fit.
