Delhi Capitals slumped to a huge defeat to KKR in match number 16 of the ongoing IPL 2024 season. After KKR bashed a colossal 272-run total upfront, Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant pumped out a rapid half-century, and shared a near-century partnership with Tristan Stubbs.

Despite Pant and Stubbs’ best run-chase efforts, the Capitals found themselves 106 runs short of their target, thus conceding their third defeat this season out of four games.

After the match, Pant justified his decision of underutilizing Axar Patel during the high-scoring KKR innings, and also talked about his recovery progress in his return to competitive cricket.

Pant reflects team’s mindset after defeat to KKR

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Rishabh Pant stated that his team planned to go as “hard as possible” as a batting unit, but ended up faltering overall to concede a huge defeat.

“As a batting unit, we talked about going hard as possible. We are a team who don’t like to lose. I want to be the team to get all out while going hard instead of blocking,” Pant said.

Rishabh Pant also rued his missed opportunities with the reviews, and cited loud crowd noise at Vizag’s ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium for the same.

Delhi Capitals spinner Axar Patel ended up bowling just one over during the entire KKR innings, where he conceded 18 runs when he was up against a raging Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

Rishabh Pant declared that he held out Patel because he did not want to over-bowl his spinners, even though the fast bowlers were also flogged all over the park by KKR batters.

“The thought process was that we didn’t want to give them the spinners. But our fast bowlers were going through the motions. But we have to keep reflecting and come positive in the next match.”

“I think my body is getting fine. Just getting out there and enjoying my time. But at the same time, cricket has ups and downs. You just have to try to get the best out of you at given time.”

Delhi Capitals’ 106-run defeat to KKR enabled them to slip to number nine on the IPL 2024 points table.

Rishabh Pant will now lead his side against cellar-dwellers Mumbai Indians in match number 20 of the tournament on April 7. The much-awaited contest will be staged at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
