Rohit Sharma as captain for Mumbai Indians (X.com)
Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians have grown together over a last decade or so. Rohit Sharma has won them five IPL titles and will surely go down as one of the greatest captains in IPL history. So, when he was removed from MI captaincy before the IPL 2024 auctions, there came a big backlash from Rohit and MI supporters.
Even though Hardik has been pretty good as a captain in his two season long captaincy career, the MI fanbase is still finding it hard to digest Rohit's removal from captaincy. However, MI's Global Head of Cricket, Mahela Jayawardene and the man who has worked with Rohit Sharma closely over the years, has defended franchise's decision.
Mahela accepted that it was a tough decision and an emotional one. He also stated that it natural for fans to react the way they have reacted and everyone seems emotional given the achievements of Rohit Sharma and his contribution for the franchise. However, he added that as a professional franchise one has to make those tough decisions and look at a larger picture.
This is what Mahela Jayawardene said -
"It was a tough decision, it was emotional. It's fair on the fans as well to react. I think everyone is emotional and we have to respect that as well. But at same time, as a franchise, you have make those decisions". (On Hardik Pandya's MI Captain).
It would be interesting to see how MI go about their business in the next edition under Hardik Pandya. They have done some impressive shopping in the auction and it is upto the players and the new skipper now to deliver in the IPL 2024.
