Shikhar Dhawan, on Saturday, announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. The dashing batter was out of the side for quite some time now, and announced the shocking decision on his social media handle.

Dhawan has been a pillar for the Indian batting in the last decade. He formed a formidable trio alongside Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and will forever be remembered for his contribution towards Indian cricket.

Dhawan's off-field issues takes toll on him

Apart from the on-field journey, Dhawan's off-field journey has also been tough. On account of mental cruelty, he was granted divorce from his estranged wife, Aesha Mukerji in October 2023. Since then, he has unfortunately had no contact with his son, Zoravar, and that has affected him badly.

Speaking to Hindustan Times Dhawan stated that he wants Zoravar to know about his cricketing journey and retirement. The former opener mentioned that he also wants his son to remember his dad as someone, who brought prosperity and is a good human being.

"Zoraver is 11 now. I hope he gets to know about my retirement & all about my cricket journey but more than as a cricketer, I would like for Zoraver to remember me as a good human being who does good deeds & brings positivity to people around him," said Dhawan to HT.

Shikhar Dhawan retirement: Journey of a champion

Dhawan made his international debut in 2010, but it wasn't until his Test debut in 2013 that he became a force to reckon with.

However, it was the 50-over format where he truly excelled. Batting at the top of the order, the Delhi batter struck 6,793 runs in 167 matches, including 17 centuries. He was one of the pedominent reason why India won the Champions Trophy in 2013, where he finished as the highest run-scorer.

Dhawan last played for India in 2022, and since then has not been considered for top-level cricket.
