'Don't Do That In Team Game': Irfan Pathan Slams MSD's 'Selfish' Gesture Vs PBKS

In match No.49 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 1, 2024.

Earlier in the match, PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first, CSK openers Ajinkya Rahane and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad started to a good start in the powerplay. But eventually, lost the wicket of Rahane (29 runs in 24 balls) when Harpreet Brar dismissed the right-handed batsman. 

Things went worse as in form batter Shivam Dube was dismissed for a golden duck and Ravindra Jadeja just scored 2 off 4 balls. 

CSK managed to score a total of 162/7 in their 20 overs with significant contributions from Ruturaj Gaikwad (62 runs off 48 balls), and Sameer Rizvi (21 runs off 23 balls).

MS Dhoni played a cameo (14 runs off 11 balls) that became the highlight of the match as fans and supporters at Chepauk enjoyed the short stay of MS Dhoni on the crease. His innings comprised one four and one maximum before he faced a run-out. 

Irfan Pathan Raised Question On MS Dhoni's Act Of Refusing Single 

The act that MS Dhoni did at the start of his arrival raised many questions about him and annoyed many including Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan. 

MS Dhoni refused a single or even a double despite having a power-hitter Daryl Mitchell at the other end of the pitch. The New Zealand cricketer was sure enough that it could be a single easy ran from the non-striker's end and even reached the striker's end before returning. 

In a way, Mitchell completed two runs while Dhoni refused to take a single run. This act of Dhoni was not appreciated by many and even former all-rounder Irfan Pathan raised questions on this in a chat at Star Sports. 

"He shouldn't have done that (refusing a single). This is a team game. Don't do that in a team game. The other guy is also an international player. If he had been a bowler, I would have understood it for sure. You have done that with (Ravindra) Jadeja and with Mitchell as well. You don't need to do that. He could have avoided it," Pathan added.

Irfan Pathan said that MS Dhoni should not have refused the single because this is a team game, if the other player was a bowler it would have still made sense but the player you have at the other end is an international player refusing a single should have been avoided at that point of the game. 

CSK will play its next match against Punjab Kings on May 5, 2024.
