South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi cut through Australia’s batting line-up in the second ODI match at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in MacKay on Friday, August 22. Defending 278 runs for a win, the 29-year-old dismissed Australian number three Marnus Labuschagne before decimating their lower order to grab match-winning figures of 5-42 in 8.4 overs.

South Africa’s 84-run win in the game also marked a series win for the Proteas, occurring just a couple of months after Ngidi starred in their WTC 2025 triumph over Australia, a testament to the speedster’s sustained success across formats.

Lungi Ngidi Gloats Over South Africa’s Brand Of Cricket

Lungi Ngidi seems to be reveling in South Africa’s sustained success off late, as evidenced by his latest interview with the ICC. The fast bowler emphasized the importance of players sticking to their “brand of cricket”, and gloated about the freedom that they have been receiving by the coaching staff. He said:

“The most important thing is how we played. Are we playing our brand of cricket? Are we playing the way we want to play? When we lose and we're not playing our way or with the freedom that the coach has given us, then it's a problem. But when we execute and we play the way we want to play, that's the beautiful thing.”

Lungi Ngidi also urged fellow fast bowlers to set their own fields and bowl accordingly to the situation and as per the conditions. He added:

“It's pretty much about giving you the freedom to bowl what you want to bowl. We've been playing international cricket for a couple of years now, so we kind of know what we're good at and what we need to do. Set your field and bowl what you want to bowl according to whatever you see in front of you. Play the conditions in front of you and don't be scared to try things.”

With series already in the bag, Lungi Ngidi and the rest of his South Africa teammates will now face Australia in a dead-rubber on Sunday, August 24. The third match of the series will also be hosted by the Great Barrier Reef Arena in MacKay.
