'Doesn't See A Natural Leader' Scott Styris Labels Suryakumar's Captaincy As 'Temporary'

As India gear up for the first T20I against Sri Lanka on July 27, Suryakumar Yadav is set to begin his tenure as the T20I captain.

This significant change follows India’s T20 World Cup triumph, with Suryakumar taking over from Hardik Pandya, and Shubman Gill stepping in as vice-captain under his leadership. This decision marks a notable shift under the guidance of new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

In a recent interview, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris shared his views on these developments. Styris expressed support for Gill’s role as vice-captain, acknowledging his potential to grow into the leadership role while actively playing.

However, he raised concerns about Suryakumar's appointment, suggesting it may be a short-term solution rather than a long-term strategy.

The cricketer-turned-commentator speculated that Gambhir’s decision reflects a lack of a natural leader within the current T20I squad.

"It's more the long term picture. What it says to me, with Hardik Pandya not being captain, all the senior players retiring. Maybe Gautham Gambhir just doesn't see a natural leader at the moment, which is why he's gone for for Suryakumar Yadav as almost like a bridge or a temporary captain for a year or two. And then maybe Gill steps in in that role in a couple of years time," he said.
