In the history of the global T20 franchise leagues, the Indian Premier League is a pioneer, and the excitement of this tournament is unreal. But ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, a bizarre twist has shaken fans as several foreign stars have shockingly chosen the Pakistan Super League over the IPL.

Adding to the surprise wave, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, and a few more big names have jumped to Pakistan’s T20 league. Reflecting on that, the English all-rounder David Willey took a jibe at the IPL.

Willey claims PSL feels safer than the IPL

Since the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008, the league has gone far from just a franchise league to a global T20 sensation. Over the years, players across the globe showcased their firepower on the big stage, and fans enjoyed some exceptional performances. But the upcoming IPL 2026 is set to be a little different for a reason.

Just ahead of the mini auction, some of the foreign stars made their way towards the Pakistan Super League, which is almost clashing with IPL’s schedule. Adding to the buzz, English all-rounder Davis Willey took a dig at the IPL, telling Hindustan Times that PSL feels safer amid auction uncertainties

“I think it's very individual. You maybe never quite know how the IPL auction will pan out. I think there's a little bit more certainty and security with the PSL for players. And, you know, depending on individual circumstances, people might feel like they've got more chance of actually playing in the PSL rather than just sitting on the sidelines for 10-11 weeks, which can be a defining factor for people,” he said.

What really sets ILT20, PSL, and IPL apart

Veteran David Willey brings vast franchise league experience, having starred in the IPL, PSL, and now representing Dubai Capitals in ILT20. When he was asked about the key difference between the teams, his answer stunned everyone.

“They all present different challenges. You get different pitches, and the dew is a huge factor here, similar to the PSL. In India, you have a wide variety of wickets. The quality and depth of players in the IPL is phenomenal. Here, you have more overseas players in each team, and you also have to juggle how you use your associate and local players, which is another challenge,” he said.

“All three leagues have their own intricacies that make them interesting. But naturally, in India, the scale and magnitude of the IPL is something you won’t experience anywhere else in sport. It’s a pretty special league,” he added.

It’s not just Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali, as David Warner and Kane Williamson also joined the PSL after missing out on the IPL. Adding to this, David Willey opted out of IPL 2025 and played PSL’s most recent season.
