Former South Africa captain and veteran IPL star Faf du Plessis has withdrawn from the IPL 2026 auction. He confirmed that he will instead focus on playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). 

The announcement came just two weeks before the IPL auction, scheduled for December 15 in Abu Dhabi.

Faf du Plessis trolled for prioritising PSL over IPL

In a social media statement, Faf du Plessis confirmed that he will not be entering his name in the upcoming IPL 2026 mini-auction, as he wishes to focus on the PSL 2026 season instead.

After 14 seasons in the Indian Premier league, he explained that it was time for a fresh challenge and a change of environment. 

He also added that while he won’t be part of this IPL season, this is not a goodbye to India, a country he said he holds close to his heart.

However, fans aren’t convinced. Many trolled him, saying Faf chose PSL due to the fear of being unsold in the IPL auction. 

Many also questioned PSL’s standards, saying only retired and aged players pressure the league, whereas IPL is overwhelmed with emerging and quality talents.

That being said, Faf du Plessis’ IPL journey began in 2013 with Chennai Super Kings, where he quickly became a crucial member of the team. After seven seasons with CSK, he also played for Rising Pune Supergiant during CSK’s suspension years in 2016 and 2017.

After CSK released him in the 2022 mega auction, Royal Challengers Bengaluru immediately signed him and handed him the captaincy.

Faf responded with some of the best cricket of his career, including a stunning 730-run season in 2023, one of the finest by an RCB captain. 

In 2025, Faf du Plessis was again related to the IPL mega auction pool, where he went unsold first but was later picked by the Delhi Capitals, where he scored 202 runs before an injury ended his campaign.

Across his IPL career, Faf played 154 matches, scoring 4,773 runs at an average of 35.09 and a strike rate of 135.78, placing him among the tournament’s most successful overseas batters.

Now, Faf du Plessis is turning his attention to the PSL, a league he previously played in between 2019 and 2021 for Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.
