Yuzvendra Chahal, known for his passion for chess, recently shared how the strategic game has significantly contributed to his cricket journey, enabling him to overcome challenges and nurture a patient mindset.

Chahal, who has represented India in the World Youth Chess Championship, has joined SG Alpine Warriors as their ambassador in the ongoing Global Chess League. Here's what Chahal said as per a press release on Monday:

“My first jerseys came from playing chess, and the sport has taught me patience over the years. And that helps me in my cricket because sometimes you may bowl well but not get a wicket, and it is then that patience is really needed.”

Further delving into the parallels between chess and cricket, Chahal pointed out a big difference between the two games.

In cricket, players can express aggression, whereas in chess, a composed and calm approach is paramount, which eventually helps manage challenges effectively in real life.

“Chess and cricket are similar, but in cricket, you can show your aggression, but in chess, you can't. It is all about how calm you are in chess. For example, if I am bowling, I can say something to the batter, but in chess, you must stay calm and focused. And it will eventually help you in your life as well.”

During a light-hearted conversation, Chahal also humorously shared that he holds the coveted title of the chess master within the Indian cricket team as none of his teammates has been able to challenge him in this particular sport.

"In the Indian team, there is no one who can beat me [laughs]. Sometimes I play with R Ashwin, and then there is Shanker Basu, our trainer with whom I used to play. We used to play quite a bit during the flights and when we were travelling."

Chahal was last seen in action during the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League. He will now be representing India in the upcoming tour of West Indies next month, donning the blue jersey, as he has been selected in the ODI squad.
