two days of the third India vs England Test at Lord's, England's first innings total of 387 gives them a significant advantage. India trails by 242 runs with seven wickets remaining. However, the match has been hampered by a severe over-rate shortfall from both sides.
A combined total of 22 overs were lost across the first two days. India managed only 83 overs on day one, while the second day saw just 75 overs bowled collectively, falling 15 short of the scheduled 90. Former England captain Michael Vaughan launched a scathing critique of the slow pace, dismissing fines as ineffective.
Vaughan Slams Cash Penalties In England-India Tests
Michael Vaughan took a sarcastic take on the slow over-rate penalty that Ben Stokes & Co. received, implying that the players do not take those penalties seriously.
“I don’t think fines work. I think these lads are quite rich. The cash won't affect them. Been a problem for Test match cricket for a while. I know it’s hot. I know we’ve had a few injuries, but when we get to the fifth day, we have to bowl the 90 overs,” Vaughan told BBC Sports.
Vaughan also expressed frustration at the slow pace on the first four days compared to the urgency often seen on the final day.
“I have no idea why on days one, two, three, and four, we can see the game played at a snail’s pace. Surely the game moves on by saying on day one there’s 90 overs. Guess what we’re going to do? We’re going to bowl 90 overs on day two exactly the same,” Vaughan added.
Vaughan Voices For 90-overs Per Day Rule
Michael Vaughan argued that making the 90-over quota mandatory every day, regardless of delays, is the only solution to guarantee improvement.
“You watch on day five when the players, the umpires, know that 90 overs have to be bowled. They’ll be running around. There won’t be as many drinks breaks, there won’t be as many delays because they know that 90 overs have to be bowled. So I’d make it very, very simple. You have to bowl the 90 overs. I would guarantee that would improve the pace.” Vaughan concluded.
Meanwhile, India has already lost three wickets and still trails by 242 runs in the Lord's Test after England's dominant show with the bat on Day 1. With KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to resume at the crease on Day 3 for India, fans now await another exciting day of Test action.
