Former England captain Michael Vaughan has thrown light on Rishabh Pant's comparison with Australian legend Adam Gilchrist. Pant, India's newly appointed vice-captain in Tests, had an outstanding start to the England tour, slamming sensational hundreds in both innings of the Headingley Test.
Vaughan Calls Rishabh Pant A Trend Setter
Swashbuckling Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been consistently compared with Adam Gilchrist, considering the similarity in the playing styles of the two. While Gilchrist was Australia's go-to number seven in Tests, Pant has maintained an incredible record as a number five batter for India.
Speaking on the first episode of the recently-launched Stick to Cricket show, former England skipper Michael Vaughan shared his thoughts on Rishabh Pant's comparison with Gilchrist.
Vaughan hailed the Australian legend as the best-ever keeper-batter. However, he also called Rishabh Pant a trend-setter, highlighting his growing stature as a Test cricketer despite having the perfect game to succeed in white-ball cricket.
“Adam Gilchrist for me is the best wicketkeeper-batter. But Pant just set a new trend. I mean MS Dhoni, across white ball cricket, was fantastic. You would think with the way that he plays, Pant would be completely suited to the white ball game and not so much the Test game, But his Test record is miles better than his white ball record.” Vaughan was quoted as saying by Express Sports.
The English great further went on to laud Pant for his unique batting antics, which has earned him massive applause as a match-winner in the purest format.
“There’s a lot of science in that madness the way that he plays. You can see even Ben Stokes is admiring when he’s batting.” he added.
Pant has been one of India's most valuable assets in Test cricket, amassing 3200 runs at an average of 44.4 and a blistering strike rate of 74. The keeper-batter will next be seen in action when India face England in the second Test of the series at Edgbaston.
