'Can still bowl and do...': Mitchell Starc Brushes Aside Injury Concerns; Vows To Play On Second Day

Day 1 of the fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test saw Australia's Mitchell Starc trample over England in a rousing display of fast bowling.  Starc claimed wickets of Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, and Start Broad, ensuring Australia bundled out the hosts under 300.

However, not everything was merry for the pacer who went off the field after his first spell to attend to his shoulder injury, only to return and rattle the home side batters.

After the day's play at The Oval, Starc asserted that his shoulder injury is not serious and he can still bowl for Australia. As quoted by FoxSports, the 33-year-old stated that he did not want to leave Australia a man-down, having missed several Tests in a similar fashion earlier.

Here's what Starc said

“I’m not interested in getting it scanned or anything like that. That (damage to the AC joint) is what the doc and physio think’s the case. We’ll worry about that at the end of the week. There’s a bit of discomfort there … nothing major. I can still bowl and do what I need to do.

I’ve played for over 10 years and been through a few niggles and injuries through the time. There have been times when I’ve left the team a man down or other people have. We all push through niggles and whatnot, so it’s no different this week, just a little bit of discomfort.”

Talking about the Test, the Pat Cummins-led side are 61 for 1 with Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne batting on 26* and 2*, respectively at stumps on Day 1, trailing England by 222.
