In India’s modern cricket history, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has turned out to be a legend. With unreal pace, accuracy, and being a threat to the opponent batters, the speedster has been a bowling icon of the nation.

Even after being the exception, Bumrah’s journey to become the ‘Pace Ace Jasprit Bumrah’ was not an easy one, but his grit and determination turned that into reality. In a recent interaction, Team India’s former bowling coach Bharat Arun revealed Bumrah’s sacrifice.

Bharat Arun Shares Untold Stories Of Bumrah’s Early Days

Starting his cricketing journey like millions of kids in India, Jasprit Bumrah was made for great things. Filled with immense talent and grit, the early days were tough. From not being selected for the Under-19 side to carrying the nation's dream on his shoulder, the speedster evolved his game and turned himself into a pace ace.

Having worked closely with Jasprit Bumrah since his early days, former Team India bowling coach Bharat Arun has witnessed the pacer’s remarkable evolution firsthand. Speaking to the Bombay Sport Exchange, he reflected on how Bumrah sharpened his skills and became a legend of modern-day cricket.

“In 2013, Bumrah had come to the NCA for an Under-19 camp and pitched for selection. He couldn’t make the team, but he was in the 30-member camp at the national cricket academy. In all fairness, we also tried to change Bumrah’s action,” Arun said.

“He was remolded, but then the action was great, the ball was not going quick. What’s the point in having a great action if the balls aren’t effective? He could bowl quick, and so we had a discussion with the physio and the strength and conditioning coach. We said, I wouldn’t want to touch his action because it’s very unique and generates a lot of pace. But also puts him under stress,” Arun said.

Bumrah’s Sacrifice To Become A Legend

The great things always come with some sacrifices, and it often comes with giving up favourite foods. As Virat Kohli’s journey of giving up his favourite foods is known to all, Jasprit Bumrah also walked on the same path. In the interaction, Bharat Arun reflected on Bumrah’s sacrifice that led him to become modern cricket’s pace legend.

“We called him and told him: to take the impact of fast bowling, you need to be like a bull. That comes down to eat, exercise, and sacrifices. In all fairness, Bumrah instantaneously changed. He started eating healthy, he was working in the gym like. Like Virat Kohli, he was extremely dedicated. He loved burgers, pizzas, milkshakes. But overnight, he gave up everything. A Punjabi boy living in Gujarat – but his love for bowling was greater than any food craving,” he said.

After wrapping up the Test series, Jasprit Bumrah is set to be back in action in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. As Team India starts their campaign on September 10, the pace ace is all set to unleash his magic once again on the field.
