It was heart-stopping stuff in Chennai where South Africa just got past Pakistan in World Cup 2023 by a bare margin of one wicket while chasing 271 as Keshav Maharaj played the jail-break shot while Tabraiz Shamsi was crucial with the ball in hand alongside the final few moments with the bat surviving six deliveries.

Shamsi bowled a superb spell of four wickets for 60 runs in his ten overs, which was extremely pivotal in putting breaks on the run-rate. The left-arm leg spinner, after the game, explained that he had one job in hand, and that was to ensure that he didn't lose his wicket in the end by playing a rash shot.

"Really happy. I knew I had to do a job there, but the guys before me set it up. Credit goes to those guys too. I’ve played enough cricket to know sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn’t. I didn’t expect to be here with my pads on doing this interview."

He further spoke on the shot selection and revealed in a light-hearted manner that if he had gotten out, his teammates wouldn't have welcomed him back to the dressing room, which clearly meant that he had only one option, and that was to defend. Also, having Maharaj on the other end helped who kept his nerve and ensured a finish in the end.

"If I tried to play a big shot and if it didn’t come off, the boys wouldn’t welcome me back to the changeroom. So there was no doubt in my mind that I had to just defend and get Kesh on strike. These are the kind of moments you dream of, to be in the middle at the end and win your team a game. Kesh was unbelievable out there."

This thriller, which is undoubtedly the best game of the World Cup so far, will have a contrasting impact on teams' chances, while for Pakistan, it is getting tougher, the Proteas are more likely to qualify for the next stage. The African side will next feature against New Zealand on 1st November in Pune.
