After suffering a record-breaking 336-run defeat to India in the second Test at Edgbaston on July 7, England are under pressure as they prepare for the third Test at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. With the five-match series now tied at 1-1, fans are eagerly waiting to see if fast bowler Jofra Archer will return to the playing XI.
Ben Stokes Hints At Squad Shake-Up Ahead Of Lord's Test
England captain Ben Stokes has hinted that changes are likely for the next match. Speaking to the media after the crushing loss, Stokes addressed the growing speculation about Archer’s potential return.
Even though Archer wasn’t picked for the first Test at Headingley, he was with the squad during the second Test and participated in training sessions to build up his fitness.
“That'll be a decision we have to make, seeing how everyone comes together. We’ve had him here this week to get around the group and build him up with his workloads and everything. So, everyone’s being considered for the game at Lord’s,” Stokes said in the post-match press conference.
Jofra Archer, 30, has not played a Test match since 2021 due to injuries. However, his past performances still excite fans, in just 13 Tests since debuting in 2019, he has taken 42 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls. Known for his pace and ability to turn matches around, Archer could bring fresh energy to England’s struggling bowling attack.
Not only that, but England’s bowlers looked tired during India’s dominant display in the second Test. With only a three-day gap before the third match, Stokes and the team management may be forced to rotate players and bring in some fresh legs.
Besides Archer, another pace option has been added to the squad, Gus Atkinson. The 27-year-old, who hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury in a Test against Zimbabwe in May, is also in line for a possible return. His inclusion shows England are seriously looking at ways to support their bowling attack.
England started the series strong by chasing down 371 in the first Test to go 1-0 up. However, a poor performance in Birmingham allowed India to level the series. With the score now at 1-1, the third Test at Lord’s becomes a key moment in this exciting series.
