In an exciting turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to add a sixth team to the Women’s Premier League (WPL). At present, five teams take part in the star-studded women’s league every year.
During the mega auction for the WPL’s 2026 season, the Delhi Capitals Women’s owner, Parth Jindal, revealed that the board was planning to add another team to the league, which would also make home and away fixtures a more viable option.
“BCCI is planning an additional WPL team… Home and away fixtures will then be ideal for the league,” Jindal told the reporters during the WPL mega auctions.
Meanwhile, more details about the additional team are not yet known. It can not be confirmed which new franchise will enter the tournament or when the changes will take effect. WPL may possibly see the sixth team from the 2027 season.
WPL mega auction sees massive bids
Ahead of the sixth team coming into effect, the WPL saw massive success in the player auctions for the 2026 season. Many star players went under the hammer and received substantial bids.
The star all-rounder Deepti Sharma was the highest-selling player at the event, with the UP Warriorz Women using the Right To Match to repurchase her for 3.2 crores. Delhi Capitals had ended the bid on her base price of 50 lakhs, but UPW enabled the RTM. Then, DC raised her price to 3.2 crores, and the Warriorz did not think long before repurchasing her.
Apart from her, the other big purchases of the evening were Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine, and Meg Lanning, who were sold to the Mumbai Indians for 3 crores, the Gujarat Giants for 2 crores, and the UP Warriorz for 1.9 crores, respectively.
