Delhi Capitals Women franchise released legendary Australian cricketer and a captain of three years, Meg Lanning just prior to the WPL 2026 auction a few months ago. On the day of the auction on Thursday, November 27; Capitals owner Parth Jindal dropped a massive hint involving the next potential leader of the team for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
It is worth noting that while speaking with the reporters at the bidding event, the name of South African skipper and prolific opener Laura Wolvaardt emerged as one of the leading contenders, until Jindal himself personally refuted the claims.
Delhi Capitals to have an Indian captain, confirms owner
During the WPL 2026 auction event on November 27, Delhi Capitals Women franchise owner Parth Jindal was asked if the team will be led by South African national skipper Laura Wolvaardt, considering the latter recently led the Proteas Women into the finals of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India.
Moreover, Wolvaardt was also acquired by the Delhi Capitals Women franchise on the day of the bidding event. While speaking with the reporters at the auction, Capitals owner Parth Jindal, however, refuted rumours of Laura Wolvaardt leading the franchise altogether.
Furthermore, Jindal claimed that the franchise is aiming to appoint an Indian captain ahead of the WPL 2026 season in a couple of months’ time, thus dropping a massive hint involving the potential ascension of Capitals veteran and Indian star batter Jemimah Rodrigues. He said:
“No, no. We are very clear that we will have a Indian captain.”
Jemimah Rodrigues has already been a part of the Delhi Capitals Women franchise since the inaugural edition of the WPL back in 2023. In 24 innings for the franchise spanning three different editions, Rodrigues has minted over 500 runs at a strike rate of nearly 140.
As of now, it remains to be seen if the Delhi Capitals Women franchise will appoint the World Cup winning cricketer as captain, or has another potential Indian candidate as future captain in mind.
