The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the country’s richest and most powerful cricket body, is set to choose its next president later this month. Normally, this is done through elections, but this time it looks like there won’t be any voting. Instead, the decision will be made unanimously.
The post became vacant after Roger Binny, a former India cricketer, stepped down in July when he turned 70. According to BCCI rules, anyone above 70 is not eligible to hold office. Since then, Vice-President Rajeev Shukla has been handling responsibilities as the senior-most official. Shukla has been with the board in top roles for years and is now managing affairs until a new president takes charge.
BCCI’s Next President Likely To Be Chosen Without A Vote
Elections were officially scheduled for September 28, but IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told NDTV that voting is unlikely to happen. He explained that if all members agree on one candidate, then an election is not required.
"The nominations would start and you will get to know who is becoming. I don't think there will be any elections. It would be done unanimously," Dhumal said.
Nominations will still open, but once the list is clear, the chosen candidate will be declared without a contest.
This is not the first time former cricketers have led the board. Sourav Ganguly was BCCI president before Binny, while Sunil Gavaskar and Shivlal Yadav have served as interim heads in the past.
Currently, the other key positions in the board are also filled. Devajit Saikia is the secretary, Rohan Gauns Desai is the joint secretary, and Prabhtej Bhatia is the treasurer, all elected earlier this year. Within the IPL Governing Council, names like Anirudh Choudhury and Avishek Dalmiya are being discussed for important roles, but final decisions will depend on the leadership meeting.
Interestingly, the BCCI’s annual general meeting and the planned announcement of the new president both fall on September 28, the same day as the Asia Cup 2025 final in Dubai. If India makes it to the final, it could mean that top BCCI officials won’t be able to attend the big match.
