India's blue-eyed child in the shortest format of the game, Abhishek Sharma, in just a couple of years, has cemented his name in the T20 set-up in the national squad. Coached and mentored by the one and only Yuvraj Singh, the 25-year-old has stood up to make his coach proud.

After a commendable run in the age group cricket, the Vijay Merchant Trophy and the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in the years 2015-16, Abhishek Sharma made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2017-18 season for the Punjab Cricket Association. 

Playing Ranji Trophy for Punjab, Abhishek has carved out several gutsy performances for his state side. One of the foremost came in his debut, where he scored a quickfire 94. In the 2022-23 season, the youngster achieved his first century in the Ranji Trophy.

Courtesy of superb performances in the age-group cricket for the national team, Abhishek Sharma caught the eye of the Delhi Capitals in 2018. The teenager got picked for a hefty 55 lakh INR in the IPL 2018 Mega Auction. Sharma soon set the stage on fire with a blistering 46 off 19 balls in his maiden IPL game.

However, in the rest of the tournament, he failed to impress, scoring only 17 runs in the two matches. Abhishek, in the next season, got picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Nonetheless, the Hyderabad-based franchise kept the youngster around and groomed him to become the player he is today. 

SRH management backed the batter and asked him to open the innings with the experienced Travis Head. Sharma, since then, never looked back. Since 2022, Abhishek has amassed a total of 1575 runs in just 55 games, with an average strike rate of 163.02.

Abhishek Sharma started to show his merit very early in his career. Leading the U19 Indian Team to victory at the 2016 U19 Asia Cup and earning the player of the match during the final. Moreover, he was a key player in India’s win in the 2018 U19 World Cup. He scored a half-century against Bangladesh in the quarterfinal match of the tournament.

Despite a great run in the national jersey, it took Sharma 7 years to make his international debut for the Indian senior team. Nonetheless, when he finally made way to the squad, the Punjab boy made sure to prove his mettle. 

Making his debut for the Indian National Team on 6 July 2024, the lefty batter smashed a century in his maiden series. The following year, he hit the highest individual score for India in T20Is by scoring 135 runs from 54 balls vs England. Moreover, in 2025, Sharma reached the number one world ranking in the T20I format and became the youngest Indian to do so.

In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Abhishek Sharma plays for Punjab. Notably, he led the side to their maiden SMAT win in the 2023-24 season, finishing as the second-highest run scorer of the tournament with 485 runs from ten innings at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 192.46, registering two hundreds and three fifties. The same year, he achieved a significant milestone, smashing a record-equalling 28-ball century against Meghalaya.
