India fielding coach T Dilip gave an update on Axar Patel’s injury after India beat Oman in the Asia Cup 2025. Axar got hurt while trying to take a high catch during Oman’s chase. He ran in from mid-off, but after fumbling the ball, he lost balance and fell headfirst on the ground.
The 31-year-old immediately held his head and neck in pain and had to be helped off the field by the physio. He didn’t return to the field after that.
Before the injury, Axar bowled just one over, giving away 4 runs. Earlier with the bat, he had played a quick cameo, scoring 26 runs off 13 balls with three boundaries and a six.

After the match, coach T Dilip said Axar seemed okay:
“Just now I've seen Axar, he looks fine now at this point of time. That's what I can say about it."
India next face Pakistan on September 21, just a day after this game. Dilip said the team is ready for the challenge but doesn’t see it as anything more than another match.
“Regarding the Pakistan game, everybody are geared up. We treat every game as the same and we know the schedule, how it is panned out. So every game is just another game and we're ready for it,” he added.
Notably, India have topped Group A with wins over UAE, Pakistan, and Oman, and will now play the Super 4 stage against Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
Who could replace Axar if he doesn’t play?
If Axar is ruled out, India may have to change their three-spinner plan in Dubai. All-rounder Washington Sundar, who is on the standby list, could be brought in as a like-for-like replacement. Otherwise, India still have Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav as specialist spin options.
