On September 19, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the Australian women’s team has been fined after their match against India in the second One Day International (ODI) at New Chandigarh on September 16.

Notably, the fine came because Australia failed to complete their overs in the required time, something known as a “slow over-rate.”

Australia Fined for Slow Over-Rate Against India Women

The ICC confirmed that Australia was two overs short of the target, even after giving them some time allowances. As per ICC rules, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over they fall behind. Since Australia was two overs short, the fine came to 10 percent of the team’s match fee.

The decision was made by G.S. Lakshmi, a match referee from the ICC’s international panel. Australian captain Alyssa Healy accepted the punishment without argument, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge itself was laid by the on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan, along with third umpire Lauren Agenbag and fourth umpire Gayathri Venugopalan.

Despite this penalty, the bigger story of the match was India’s stunning win. Star opener Smriti Mandhana led the way with a brilliant 117 runs off just 91 balls. Thanks to her innings, India scored 292 runs before being bowled out in the 50th over.

In reply, Australia could only manage 190 runs before losing all their wickets in 41 overs, giving India a huge 102-run victory.

On the bowling side, Kranti Goud stood out for India, taking three wickets for just 28 runs. Deepti Sharma also played a key role, scoring 40 runs and taking two wickets, including the important one of Tahlia McGrath.

For Australia, Ash Gardner bowled tightly with figures of 2-39, while Darcie Brown picked up three wickets late in the innings.

Meanwhile, India will now face Australia in the third ODI at the Arun Jaitely Stadium on Saturday, 20th September.
