Ravindra Jadeja was adjudged the Player of the Series award, thanks to his all-round performance in India’s Test series against West Indies. India won the second and final Test by 7 wickets to claim the series 2-0.
Jadeja focuses on contributing more as an all-rounder
Jadeja scored a century and took eight wickets at an average of 27.13 in the two-match Test series against West Indies. After scoring an unbeaten 104 and taking 4 wickets in the first Test that India had won by an innings and 140 runs, Jadeja added three more wickets to his name in the final match. In the post-match presentation Jadeja told Harsha Bhogle that after the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin, he could be getting more chance to bowl.
“I could get a chance to bowl more overs (after Ashwin's retirement). But yeah, all in all, we’ve been doing wonderful work as a team, in terms of batting and bowling. I think we know what brand of cricket we’ve been playing over the last five, six months. So that’s a good sign as a team, that we continue to do it over a long period of time.”
While speaking of the records Jadeja said that his focus is to contribute as an all-rounder and help the side win. Winning his third Player of the Series trophy is therefore all about doing well on the field.
“To be honest, I don’t think too much about records. I just focus on contributing with both bat and ball to help my team win. I always look forward to do that. I feel if I don’t perform with bat and ball, then it doesn’t reflect my value as a player. I’m always keen and give my 100 percent. I think this is my third Man of the Series trophy, so yeah, I’m very happy to bring it back home.”
“As Gauti bhai said…”
In the post-match presentation ceremony, the veteran left-arm spinner also thanked India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir for changing his batting position. Jadeja said that batting up the order is motivating him to contribute to the win more. His mindset has changed as he is thinking more as a “proper batsman” now.
“As Gauti bhai (Gambhir) said, I’m at number six now. So I’m thinking more as a proper batsman, and that works for me. In the past, for many years, I’ve been batting at number eight, number nine, so my mindset was a little different from what I have now. I’m just trying to spend more time in the middle whenever I get a chance to bat.”
Jadeja is not part of India's ODI squad for the Australia tour. He will be next playing for India in the Tests series against South Africa scheduled to begin from November 14.
