Team India tumbled records and crumbled Pakistan in their latest Asia Cup 2023 duel in Colombo. For starters, the ‘Men in Blue’ amassed 356-2 off the back of centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

Despite batting under pristine conditions, Pakistan’s run-chase never took off as they fell a record 228 runs short of their target.

Following their big defeat, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioned Pakistan’s lacklustre effort with both bat and ball against India, and criticised fans from across the border with a stern reality check.

Sunil Gavaskar tears into Pakistan team after big defeat

Team India handed Pakistan a 228-run larruping in Colombo, a margin which turned out to be biggest run-differential across all ODIs played between the two sides. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scaled several batting milestones with their respective centuries, while ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav claimed his second best ODI figures with 5-25.

Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar blasted Pakistan’s effort with the bat. He even tore into Pakistan fans who continue to claim that Team India only has a couple of good players in their line-up. While speaking on India Today, Gavaskar questioned Pakistan for having no prominent batting presence apart from captain Babar Azam, by saying:

“You know people, particularly in Pakistan, keep on talking about India having only one or two players. I mean how many players does Pakistan have? Particularly in the batting department. Apart from Babar who do they have?”

Sunil Gavaskar also assumed that opposition teams only need to discuss and plan for dismissing Babar Azam, and they do not need to waste much of their time thinking about other Pakistani batters claiming the others are not that “scary”. He added:

“When the bowling team of the opposition sit down and dissects their batting, they would spend a lot of time on how to get Babar out. But I don't think they would spend half the time on the others. None of them are such that they would scare the bowling group of the opposition team.”

Pakistan will now face Asia Cup 2023 co-hosts Sri Lanka in their final Super Four match on September 14. The much-awaited contest is slated to be hosted by the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
