Indian captain Rohit Sharma confirmed his retirement from Test cricket on May 7. The legendary Indian opener played the last of his 67 Tests back in December 2024 against Australia at the MCG before dropping himself for the New Year affair in Sydney.

Struggling with the bat for some time in the format, the cricketer accrued just 619 runs in 14 matches across the year 2024 at a substandard average of 24.76. Under his leadership, Team India also lost a home series to New Zealand and an away one to Australia, prompting him to step down from Tests ahead of India’s hectic tour of England.

Gautam Gambhir hails “retired” Rohit Sharma

Mere hours after Rohit Sharma confirmed his retirement from Tests, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir took to X and expressed his admirations for the legendary opening batter. Sharing a picture of Sharma, Gambhir wrote:

“A master, a leader & a gem!”

Gautam Gambhir joined the Indian team as head coach back in mid-2024 last year, i.e., shortly after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket. With Gambhir and Sharma at the helm, Team India won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE earlier this year.

While Rohit Sharma was slated to tour England next month for India’s five-match Test series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be expected to name a new national skipper within the next few weeks.

Nonetheless, Sharma is currently plying his trade for the Mumbai Indians franchise in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. In 11 innings of the tournament so far, the legendary opening batter has tallied 300 runs at a strike rate of over 150 and an average of 30.
