India Women flattened South Africa by 23 runs in match five of the Women’s ODI tri-series in Colombo. The outcome helped Harmanpreet Kaur and co. book a place in the finals with series hosts Sri Lanka. South Africa, on the other hand, continue to remain winless and they will now face Sri Lanka in a virtual dead-rubber.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the match, as it panned out at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, May 7.
Jemimah ton, Deepti’s 93 catapult India to 337
Batting first, India Women mounted 337-9 from 50 overs after the early loss of in-form opener Pratika Rawal and number three Harleen Deol to Nadine de Klerk and Masabata Klaas respectively. Smriti Mandhana compiled 51 runs from 63 balls and crafted a fighting 88-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues.
Rodrigues herself whacked her career-best ODI score of 123 from just 101 balls with 15 fours and a six. Deepti Sharma at six smeared 93 from 84 balls as the two cricketers set the stage for India’s 300-plus total.
For South Africa, Klerk and Klaas added another wicket each to their tally, while Nonkululeko Mlaba dismissed Richa Ghosh and Amanjot Kaur during the slog overs.
South Africa Fall Short Despite Tryon, Dercksen 50s
Tazmin Brits and Miane Smit started off South Africa’s chase with a 63-run partnership for the second wicket after losing opening batter Lara Goodall to Amanjot Kaur. The Indian speedster further dismissed Brits while Deepti Sharma accounted for Smit before Annerie Dercksen composed 81 runs at a near run-a-ball.
Pratika Rawal and Shree Charani also chipped in with a wicket each, while Kaur added a rampaging Dercksen to her tally of victims to claim astonishing figures of 3-59. South African captain Chloe Tryon bludgeoned 67 runs from just 43 balls with four boundaries and five huge sixes to keep her side in the hunt, at least until the final two overs.
However, her dismissal to Deepti Sharma dashed South Africa’s dwindling hopes, allowing Team India to seal an emphatic 23-run win.
