'A Big Player Is One Who...': Harbhajan Singh Takes Not-So-Subtle Dig At Indian Batters After WTC Final

India's disheartening loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final has prompted critical analysis from former spinner Harbhajan Singh, who pointed out the failure of the team's top players to perform under pressure at the grandest stage.

Harbhajan unhappy with Indian batters' dismal performance in ICC finals

The Australian side left no room for doubt with a huge 209-run victory over India at The Oval on Sunday. Despite entering the final day with the task of chasing down 280 runs with seven wickets in hand, India crumbled under the weight of the challenge, managing a mere 70 runs before being bowled out for a measly 234.

During a post-match discussion on Star Sports, Harbhajan Singh was asked about the early dismissal of Virat Kohli on the final morning, as well as the disappointing performances of India's star-studded batting lineup in crucial knockout matches.

In response, the veteran spinner emphasized the significance of big players delivering in high-stakes encounters, drawing attention to the exemplary innings played by Australia's Steve Smith. He also stated that a true champion is one who leads the nation to victory on the grandest stages.

"If they have not come, we have to discuss this topic in detail and see what should be the steps going forward. We always say that big players score runs in big games - if we see Steve Smith's innings. A big player is one who wins his country the trophy on a big stage," said Harbhajan.

The erstwhile spinner shed light on India's repeated shortcomings in pivotal matches during ICC events, highlighting a notable absence of silverware since their triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

"Your records are on one side but it has been 10 years since 2013, you come close to the trophy but don't win it. So there should be some reason behind your failure to score runs," added the cricketer-turned-commentator.

The recent loss in the WTC final adds to the list of missed shots for India to claim glory in ICC events, leaving fans and experts alike yearning for a victory.

Nonetheless, the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, set to be hosted by India in October and November, presents a fresh opportunity for redemption. With the advantage of home conditions, the Indian team will aim to overcome the lingering disappointments of recent years and put an end to their ICC title drought.
