India's quest for a coveted ICC title was dealt a bitter blow as they faced a crushing defeat at the hands of Australia, succumbing to a massive 209-run loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval on Sunday.

The Indian team, requiring a daunting 444 runs for victory in their second innings, was dismissed for a mere 234, with Australia wrapping up the contest during the opening session of the final day's play.

Records tumbled in IND vs AUS WTC Final

From the outset, Australia were on the front foot, firmly establishing their dominance on Day 1. Travis Head and Steve Smith showcased their batting brilliance as both notched up splendid centuries, propelling Australia to a colossal total of 469 runs in their first innings.

However, India's top-order faltered in their response, but a gritty knock of 89 runs from Ajinkya Rahane, accompanied by valuable contributions from Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja, enabled India to evade the follow-on.

While India displayed signs of resurgence in their second innings, a determined 93-run partnership between Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc bolstered Australia's total to 270/8 before they declared their innings. Pursuing a daunting target of 444 runs, India reached a score of 164/3 at the close of play on Day 4, hinting at a potential comeback.

However, the final day commenced with Scott Boland delivering a severe blow to India's aspirations, as he claimed the crucial wickets of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over. Rahane valiantly battled on, stringing together a few attacking shots, but was eventually dismissed by Mitchell Starc for a determined 46 runs and what followed was a mere formality as India were bowled out for 234.
