Team India clinched the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup by defeating South Africa in a nerve-wracking final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. A watershed moment for Indian women’s cricket, the win echoed across the nation as fans rejoiced in unison.
The triumph sparked an outpouring of pride from the cricketing fraternity, with former players and legends hailing Harmanpreet Kaur and her team for scripting a golden chapter in Indian cricket history. Former Indian Women captain Diana Edulji, who attended the DY Patil Stadium to catch the live action, herself congratulated the ‘Women in Blue’ and described the significance of the historic outcome.
Former captain says she waited for a World Cup since 2017
Former Indian Women captain Diana Edulji has congratulated the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team for winning the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. She also congratulated the ICC and the BCCI for elevating the women’s game across the world.
Trying to contain her pride, Diana Edulji added that she waited for this moment ever since the heartbreak of the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup, where the then Indian team suffered a dramatic collapse to concede the trophy to hosts England.
While speaking with the ANI, Edulji further compared India’s 2025 Women’s World Cup with Kapil Dev’s 1983 men’s World Cup glory. She said:
“It is a proud moment. They have done well. I congratulate the team and BCCI and ICC for promoting women's cricket so much. It is a wonderful victory. The girls deserve all the accolades. Its a very proud moment for me too. I've waited for this since 2017... This is the 1983 moment for us... I want to congratulate Richa and Shafali because they have won the U-19 World Cup and now the senior World Cup as well...”
India Women won the final by 52 runs after charting 298-7 from 50 overs upfront. Young Shafali Verma and senior all-rounder Deepti Sharma both unpacked sizzling half-centuries in the innings. Shafali and Deepti also picked up seven wickets between them, with both later bagging the ‘Player of the Final’ and the ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards respectively.
