In an unfortunate turn of events, the fifth day's play of the ongoing Edgbaston Test between India and England has been delayed due to rain. With India requiring seven wickets and England needing to climb the mountain of 536 more runs, the game was well-poised for a cracking finish.
However, an incessant spell of showers caused a delayed start to the day's play, diluting the chances of a result. It's fair to say that India are in the driving seat, having set a daunting target for the home team. But, unfortunately, with rain playing spoilsport, the match is steadily heading towards a draw.
WTC Points Table Explained If Edgbaston Test Ends In A Draw
If rain forces the match officials to forfeit the fifth day's play of the Edgbaston Test, both India and England will get four points each. Thus, England's PCT will be reduced from 100 to 66.67, and they will claim the joint second place with Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, a potential drawn affair at Edgbaston will help India open their account in the WTC points table. Despite dominating the contest, the Shubman Gill-led side will have to settle for four points, increasing its PCT from zero to 16.67.
Thus, India will claim the joint-third place alongside Bangladesh, with Australia consolidating their first position. Meanwhile, the West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa will remain the bottom-sitters, as they have yet to get off the mark in the new WTC cycle.
Talking about the Test in Birmingham, rain and inclement weather have played spoilsport at the iconic venue. According to the latest report, covers are firmly in place on the pitch as well as the outfield, with the groundsmen waiting for the rain to stop so they can prepare the ground for the contest.
