The Chappell family is one of the most iconic families in Australian cricket. From Greg's batting genius, his controversial coaching stint with India, Ian's strategic acumens as a captain to Trevor's underarm bowling - the trio have always found a way to stay in the limelight. Let us turn the clock back to 1972 and take a look at an Ashes Test match where Greg and Ian Chappell achieved a rare feat .

Greg and Ian Chappell's unique feat

England batted first in the fifth Test of The Ashes 1972 at the Kennington Oval in London. The home team batted first and scored 284 in their first innings. In reply, Australia posted 399 and took a lead of 115 runs. The innings was fuelled by centuries from Greg Chappell (113 off 226) and Ian Chappell (118 Off 267). With their twin century, the brothers became the first such pair to score tons in the same Test innings.

This feat was later by four other such pairs - Sadiq and Mushtaq Mohammed ( for Pakistan in 1976), Andy and Grant Flower ( for Zimbabwe in 1995), Steve and Mark Waugh (for Australia in 1995 and 2001) and Shaun and Mitchell Marsh (for Australia in 2018).

Coming back to the historic match, England scored 356 in their second innings and set a target of 242 for the visitors. Australia chased down the target losing only five wickets and thus drawing the five match series.
