Arshad Nadeem has made history for Pakistan by winning the first individual Olympic gold medal for the country at the Paris Olympics 2024 in the men's javelin throw event.

His incredible throw of 92.97 meters not only secured him the gold but also broke the Olympic record of 90.57 meters, which was set in 2008.

Why Did Arshad Nadeem Leave Cricket?

According to the reports of Revsportz, Arshad Nadeem had to give up his dream of playing cricket and his brother Shahid explained the reason behind his decision.

Growing up in a large family with limited financial resources, Nadeem initially aspired to be a cricketer. However, due to the financial constraints his family faced, he had to give up his dream as explained by his brother.

“We are a family of nine – five brothers, two sisters and our parents. Our father is a construction worker and he was the sole breadwinner of the family. Cricket is an expensive sport and we couldn't afford it,” Shahid explained in an interaction with Revsportz.

Despite these challenges, Nadeem found his calling in athletics, and eventually focused on javelin throw after being encouraged by a teacher at his school to specialise in one sport.

“Initially, he used to participate in everything – 200m, 400m, long jump, javelin… Then, a teacher in our school told Nadeem to concentrate on one particular discipline. He chose javelin,” he added.

In recognition of his outstanding achievement, the government of Pakistan will honour Arshad Nadeem with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the second-highest civilian award in the country.
