It was India's turn to host the Border-Gavaskar Trophy of the year 2023 and India's qualification for the World Test Championship was dependent on this particular series. The first Test took place in Nagpur on a pitch where it was not easy for the batters to score runs in the first couple of days. India bowled out the Aussies for just 177 runs and the Indian team lost one wicket on the first day as well.

Rohit Sharma had to hold one end, as no batter could stitch a long partnership with him until Ravindra Jadeja came. Where no main batter could even score a half-century, Rohit went on to smash 120 runs and made it easy for the all-rounders, as the wicket got better later in the innings.

The game against England was the only game where the Indian batting line-up struggled to score runs till the semifinals. Even though the Englishmen were miserable throughout the tournament, they somehow managed to trouble the Indian batters, as India were three wickets down for just 40 runs.

Rohit Sharma, who pledged to play fearless brand of cricket at the top, had to play slow and held one end. In the tough conditions and a World Cup game, the skipper stood up and played the role of anchor. Hitman went on to smash 87 runs off 101 deliveries and batted till the 37th over, helping India reach a respectable total of 229.
