'Won't Remember Our Careers For Bilaterals' - KL Rahul Promises ICC Title Turnaround

KL Rahul took a pledge to revive India's fortunes at the major ICC tournaments as the experienced middle-order spoke about the impact of losing the recent ICC World Cup 2023 final where the nation once again fell at the last hurdle of a marquee competition.

It has been a decade since India's last ICC title victory - the 2013 Champions Trophy win in England - which remains the biggest anomaly in world cricket considering the richness and depth of resources Indian cricket has.

For players, the persistent drought of a major trophy has taken its own mental toll, especially as naysayers and even the team's passionate fans call them the new chockers and bilateral series merchants, who dominate the game between World Cups but can't seem to grab hold of them eventually.

KL Rahul On India's Title Drought

Speaking to Star Sports about the brewing pain of losing the recent Ahmedabad finale to Australia after achieving a landmark ten-game winning streak, Rahul said the players are aware of the frustration endured by the fans and are themselves just as disappointed but also keen to end the ICC title drought.

Rahul said winning the World Cups is important for cricketers, too, as they want to be remembered as champions and not as the also-rans once they are done playing. The wicketkeeper-batter hence took a pledge to give the country a major trophy in the near future.

"It really doesn't mean much or 10 years or 15 years later when we retire we will not remember our career for the runs or wickets that we've taken or other bilateral series that we won," Rahul said. "World Cups are the only thing that we will remember. So, yeah, there's that extra fire in us to go a couple of steps further the next time."

India have the chance to finally end the jinx in six months when they travel to the Caribbean & USA for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blue haven't won the title since the tournament's inaugural edition back in 2007.
