India’s prodgious cricketer, Abhishek Sharma has had a dreamy last few months as he has gone from domestic cricket to IPL stardom and is now making his mark on the international stage. The southpaw’s breakout moment came in IPL 2024, where he notched a whopping 484 runs in 16 matches as an opener for Sunrisers Hyderabad. With a sensational strike rate of 204.22 and a knack for hitting sixes (42 in the season), Abhishek quickly made a name for himself.

Abhishek Sharma’s Childhood Coach: Raj Kumar Sharma

Soon, he earned an India T20I cap and hit a century in his second game and showed that he’s here to stay. But behind Abhishek Sharma’s success are two important coaches: his dad, Raj Kumar Sharma, and his idol, Yuvraj Singh.

Raj Kumar Sharma, Abhishek’s dad, has been there since day one. He’s not only a proud father but also Abhishek’s first coach. It is worth mentioning that Raj Kumar once dreamed of playing for India but only managed to play up to under-22 North Zone level.

However, he recognized his son’s exceptional talent and put all his heart into training him. Raj went on to spend around four-five hours a day working with Abhishek and ensured he stayed disciplined and focused on his game. He even helped Abhishek adjust his technique to put more power in his shots by using the bottom hand and it paid off big time in IPL 2024.

Yuvraj Singh Steps In As Mentor

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Abhishek’s game levelled up even more when he joined a five-week training camp led by Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj took a number of young players under his wing, including Abhishek and helped them work on fitness, strength, and mental toughness.

Idolizing Yuvraj Singh

Since he was a kid, Abhishek looked up to Yuvraj Singh. His dad remembers him saying, “I want to bat like Yuvi paaji.”

Watching Yuvraj’s videos and trying to copy his style, Abhishek always wanted to hit the ball hard and long, just like his hero. When they finally trained together, Yuvraj even joked it felt like he was watching himself bat. It was a dream come true for Abhishek, and he soaked up every bit of advice Yuvraj shared.

A Bright Future Awaits For Abhishek

Abhishek’s talent was obvious from the start. During his childhood, he would smoke sixes that left everyone in awe of his ability. As he grew older, he travelled and met legends like Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara, who noticed his skills and mentored him.

Abhishek’s success today is because of his hard work, his dad’s constant support, and Yuvraj’s mentorship. With this strong backing, Abhishek’s journey has only begun, and the cricketing community is eager to see what he does next.
