India kicked off the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in some style as they thrashed Australia by a staggering marging of 295 runs in the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Nobody saw this coming as India was missing important players like their skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Shubman Gill.

But under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy, the team stepped up big time and delivered a statement win. Here's a look at India's top 5 biggest Test wins vs Australia in terms of runs.

This was a cracker of a game during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India batted first and piled up 441 runs, thanks to Sachin Tendulkar’s classy 109 and Sourav Ganguly’s fighting 85 in his farewell Test. Jason Krejza grabbed eight wickets but leaked runs like a broken tap.

In reply, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey tried to steady the Aussie ship, but Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra spun a web to bowl them out for 355. In the second innings, Indian opener Virender Sehwag smoked 92 off 107 balls and set Australia a target of 382.

The huge run chase was always going to be difficult on a turning surface and the Aussies were dismissed for 209 with Harbhajan bagging four wickets. It was a fitting farewell for Dada as India wrapped up the series 2-0.

This Test was all about the iconic Sachin vs Warne battle. India batted first and posted 257, with Nayan Mongia and Navjot Sidhu laying the foundation. Australia responded with 328 and took a crucial lead courtesy of Ian Healy’s spirited 90.

In the second innings, Sachin Tendulkar rose to the occasion and delivered by scoring an unbeaten 155 off 191 balls with 14 fours and four maximums. His knock was laden with audacious strokes against Shane Warne and it led India to 418/4 declared. Chasing 348, Australia crumbled under pressure, with Anil Kumble’s four-wicket haul sealing the deal.


3. Melbourne 1977: India wins by 222 runs

This was one for the ages. Back in the day, India pulled off a massive win at the MCG. Sunil Gavaskar led the way with a classy 118 in the second innings, supported by Mohinder Amarnath’s solid contributions in both innings.

Chasing 387, Australia’s batting collapsed like a pack of cards. Bhagwath Chandrasekhar was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up six wickets in the second innings. It was a victory that announced India’s arrival on the big stage.

India entered the match without regular skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Shubman Gill. But under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy, they delivered a stunning win.

After a shaky first innings where India managed just 150, Jasprit Bumrah led from the front with a fifer and dismissed Australia for 104. In the second innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant 161 and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 set Australia a target of 534.

Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj ran riot, bundling out the Aussies for 238 to secure a huge win on a tough pitch.

1. Mohali 2008: India wins by 320 runs

At the top spot is India’s crushing win in Mohali. MS Dhoni, leading in the absence of Anil Kumble, played a captain’s knock with 92. Sourav Ganguly’s 102 and Sachin Tendulkar’s 88 added to the fireworks as India declared at 469 in the first innings.

Australia couldn’t handle Amit Mishra’s spin, getting bowled out for 268. In the second innings, Gautam Gambhir’s ton and Sehwag’s 90 helped India declare at 314/3, setting Australia a target of 516. Harbhajan and Mishra cleaned up the visitors for 195, sealing a massive 320-run victory.
