In a game that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons (at least for Ivory Coast), Nigeria delivered a cricketing masterclass in Lagos during the T20 World Cup sub-regional Africa Qualifier. The match on Sunday, November 25, saw Nigeria post a mammoth 271/4 and bundle out Ivory Coast for an almost unbelievable seven runs. .

Nigeria Piles On The Runs

After winning the toss, Nigeria chose to bat first. Selim Salau smashed the ball to all corners of the park as he smashed a blistering 112 off just 53 balls before retiring. His innings was a spectacle and full of some explsoive shots.

Then came Isaac Okpe, who went berserk with an unbeaten 65 off just 23 deliveries, smashing six sixes and three fours. By the end of 20 overs, Nigeria posted a colossal 271/4 and set a target that looked more like a mountain than a score.

Ivory Coast Collapses In a Heap

Chasing 272 was always going to be a tall order, but no one expected the Ivory Coast innings to unravel the way it did. Opener Ouattara Mohamed top-scored with… wait for it… four runs. That’s right, four. And he was the only batter to hit the middle of the bat with any intent.

The rest of the lineup? A disaster. Six ducks, no boundaries, and a procession of wickets saw Ivory Coast crumble to the lowest-ever total in men’s T20I cricket. The previous record, set by the Isle of Man (10 runs), was well and truly shattered. Ivory Coast’s innings lasted just 7.3 overs, and the scoreboard read like a horror story - seven runs all out.

Nigeria didn’t just win, they absolutely crushed it. The massive victory by a whopping 264 runs failed to break the record for the biggest win by runs in T20Is but it’s definitely one for the books. Zimbabwe’s 290-run win over Gambia still holds that record. However, this was a statement performance by Nigeria as they displayed their dominance.

What’s Next For Nigeria and Ivory Coast?

It is worth mentioning that this game is part of the African teams' qualification process for the T20 World Cup 2026 and Nigeria has certainly shown that they are serious contenders. On the other hand, Ivory Coast will want to move on from this humiliating loss and make a comeback.
