India bounced back in spectacular fashion to take the top position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings after a commanding 295-run victory against Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Perth on Monday (November 25). This result saw India leapfrog Australia, who had briefly held the top spot after India's shock 0-3 whitewash loss to New Zealand earlier this month.

India’s dominant performance in the first Test not only gave them a 1-0 lead in the BGT series but also helped them regain control of the WTC points table. With this victory, India moved back with 61.11 PCT, while Australia’s PCT slipped from 62.5% to 57.69 PCT after their defeat.

As of now, India occupies the first spot in the WTC standings, with Australia in second place, just marginally ahead of third-placed Sri Lanka, who have a PCT of 55.56%.

India's WTC Qualification Scenario

India now has four more matches to go, with their qualification for the 2025 WTC final at Lord's next year. To secure direct qualification for the final, India must maintain their strong form and win at least three of their remaining four matches in the series. If they do so, they will confirm a top-two finish in the points table and seal a spot in the final.

India’s maximum points tally for this cycle is 158 points, and with a possible PCT of 69.29%, they could strengthen their position at the top of the table if they continue their winning run.

The next Test of the series will be a Day-Night pink-ball contest at the iconic Adelaide Oval from December 6-10. The remaining three Tests in the series will be crucial for both teams, with Australia also looking to bounce back and reclaim their lead in the points table.
