Shubman Gill is a gem of a cricketer and India's new captain and number 4 batter showed his class in the first Test at Headingley. He smacked his maiden Test ton in SENA country. Also, he entered an elite list comprising of Indian captains with Test century on their maiden outing as the leader of the team.
Gill broke several records and with his score of 147, Gill broke into the list of Indian captains with highest scores in England. Here is a list of the 5 Indian captains who have slammed the highest scores in England.
5) Sourav Ganguly - 128 at Leeds
Just like Gill, Sourav Ganguly also scored his first Test century in England as captain at Headingley, Leeds. On a cloudy morning, he elected to bat first against a strong England attack and the decision paid off as Sanjay Bangar and Rahul Dravid set the foundation for a big score.
Dravid scored a majestic hundred and it was followed by centuries from Schin Tendulkar and Ganguly. The then India captain was the chief aggressor as he took on England spinner, Ashley Giles with utmost ease and smacked a quick-fire 128 to help India win the match and level the series.
4) Shubman Gill - 147 at Leeds
Gill came into the Test match on the back of a disappointing outing against Australia. However, the newly appointed captain left behind the past demons as he unleashed an innings of lifetime and tore apart the English attack. He looked aggressive right from the onset as the batter slammed his 6th Test century and was dismissed for a well-compiled 147 to silence his critics.
3) Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi - 148 at Leeds
One of the finest batters of India, the former captain was a classy player and his each stroke spoke elegance. In the 1967 Leeds Test, England batted first and thanks to Geoff Boycott's 246, the hosts posted 550/4. India, in reply got bundled out for 164 as England en-forced the follow-on.
This is when Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi showed great fight as he batted with resilience and slammed a gritty 148 but couldn't prevail India from losing the match.
2) Virat Kohli - 149 at Birmingham
Virat Kohli entered the 2018 Birmingham Test with a chorus of boos from the England crowd. However, when his innings ended, the same set of fans gave a standing applause as the Indian captain had played one of the finest knocks in England. India kept losing wicket at regular intervals and Kohli was the lone warrior as he played like a warrior and hammered 149 to silence his critics.
1) Mohammad Azharuddin - 179 at Manchester
The 1990 Manchester Test is known for Sachin Tendulkar's maiden Test ton in England but it gets forgotten for Mohammad Azharuddin's majestic captain's knock. In the first innings, India were going after England's 519 and they needed someone to play a big knock.
The captain of the team stepped in as Azhar played some delightful strokes and used his Hyderabadi wrists to woe the fans as he scored 179 and helped the team draw the game.
