The ICC World Cup is without a doubt, one of the most action-packed and fiercely contested in the sporting world. Since its inception in 1975, the ICC World Cup has witnessed magnificent displays of skill, character, and nail-biting finishes. 

Each tournament has seen teams fighting for glory with ferocious competitiveness which sums up the spirit of the game in its purest form.

The legendary West Indies team of the 1970s and 80s showed their dominance by winning the trophy on two consecutive occasions. The turn of the millennium witnessed the rise of Australia's cricketing juggernaut as they claimed an astonishing three consecutive titles. Other powerhouses of the sport such as India, Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka have also left their mark in the World Cup history with their impactful performances.

As we gear up for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at the list of World Cup winners since the inception of the tournament.


Cricket World Cup 1975 – West Indies

Led by the legendary Clive Lloyd, West Indies were a force to be reckoned with as they went on to win the tournament in a grand fashion. In the final against Australia, after experiencing early setbacks, the WI skipper scored a stunning century and stitched a century partnership with Rohan Kanhai to help his side post 291/8. 

The West Indies excelled with the ball and in the outfield, with Keith Boyce taking four wickets and five runouts, including three by Sir Vivian Richards as the Aussies were bowled out for 274. Remaining undefeated, Windies clinched the inaugural World Cup title.


Cricket World Cup 1979 – West Indies

West Indies' 1979 World Cup campaign witnessed their continued dominance in international cricket as they successfully defended their title. Facing England in the final, Sir Vivian Richards delivered a batting masterclass with a majestic unbeaten 138.

Collis King also scored a blistering 86 off just 66 balls as the duo helped Windies post 286/8. In response, Joel Garner's five-wicket haul resulted in England being dismissed for 194 as the Windies were once again crowned champions at Lord's Cricket Ground.


Cricket World Cup 1983 – India

The Indian team’s victory in 1983 was a big upset as they defied the odds to lift their maiden trophy. It was also a turning point for cricket in the country. India set a modest target of 183 runs.

The task appeared easy for the mighty West Indian batting line-up, who were looking to complete a hattrick of World Cup wins. However, the Indian bowlers turned the tables with their exceptional performance, resulting in a historic 43-run victory.


Cricket World Cup 1987 – Australia

Australia's maiden World Cup win in 1987 was an outcome of their meticulous planning and comprehensive strategy. Their victory was powered by consistent performances from both bowlers and batters. 

Led by Allan Border, the Aussies posted a competitive score of 253 runs, powered by David Boon's impressive 75 off 125 balls. In response, England fell short by a mere 7 runs, marking Australia's first of many World Cup victories.


Cricket World Cup 1992 – Pakistan

Pakistan's victory in 1992 was a celebration of resilience as Imran Khan’s men rose like a phoenix from the ashes after a shaky start. Pakistan posted a challenging 249/6 runs, with their skipper top-scoring with 72. 

England's response was stifled by Pakistan's splendid bowling, especially Wasim Akram's match-turning spell of 3/49 that restricted them to 227. The 22-run victory for Pakistan was an exceptional story of resilience as the Men in Green scripted their maiden World Cup win.


Cricket World Cup 1996 – Sri Lanka

Arjuna Ranatunga's leadership and the team's fearless approach to the game propelled Sri Lanka to a memorable World Cup victory against all odds. The Aussies posted 241/7 in the final on the back of Mark Taylor’s 74. 

In response, after losing both openers early, Sri Lanka's unconventional top-order batting, especially Aravinda de Silva's brilliant century took the world by storm. Their successful chase with 22 balls to spare culminated in their first World Cup win.


Cricket World Cup 1999 – Australia

Australia’s 1999 World Cup win was an exhibition of their dominant reign in cricket. After restricting Pakistan to a paltry 132, Australia effortlessly chased down the target in just 20.1 overs, powered by an explosive half-century from wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist. 

The eight-wicket triumph not only signified Australia's dominance but also marked the beginning of their unprecedented winning streak in World Cup cricket.


Cricket World Cup 2003 – Australia

Australia in 2003 demonstrated what happens when a team is in full swing with players performing at their peak. The defending champions amassed a massive score of 359 courtesy of skipper Ricky Ponting's breathtaking unbeaten century (141) Damien Martyn's blistering 88. 

Despite gallant efforts from the Indian batters, the mammoth target proved unassailable as they were bowled out for 234. Australia's emphatic 125-run victory consolidated its place as the superpower of cricket in the early 21st century.


Cricket World Cup 2007 – Australia

Australia made history by becoming the first team to win three consecutive World Cups and highlighted their unassailable supremacy in the game. In a rain-affected final, Australia set a challenging target of 281 runs, thanks to Adam Gilchrist's explosive century (149).

Despite Sri Lanka's spirited chase, Australia's potent bowling attack sealed a 53-run victory via the Duckworth-Lewis method.


Cricket World Cup 2011 – India

Led by the charismatic MS Dhoni, India's 2011 World Cup win was an ode to a new generation of cricketers. Sri Lanka set a challenging target of 275 courtesy of Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten ton (103).

India faced early setbacks but a century stand between Gautam Gambhir (97) and Dhoni (91*) led India to victory with 10 balls to spare. Dhoni’s unforgettable last ball six ended a 28-year World Cup drought and triggered nationwide celebrations.


Cricket World Cup 2015 – Australia

The 2015 World Cup final saw Australia overpower New Zealand and reaffirm their global dominance. The four-time champions, after restricting New Zealand to 183, chased down the target with ease.

Michael Clarke's scored composed 74 in his final ODI to guide his side to victory. The seven-wicket triumph marked Australia's fifth World Cup win, the most by any team in cricket history.


Cricket World Cup 2019 – England

England’s win in the 2019 World Cup was a dramatic Super Over thriller, giving them their long-awaited triumph. Both teams scored 241 runs, resulting in a Super Over, which also ended in a tie. 

However, England were declared winners on the boundary count rule as they won their maiden World Cup. The thrilling finale marked one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the sport.
