Afghanistan: 83/2 in 21.4 overs [Ibrahim - 41*, Gurbaz - 22; Shakib - 1/26), Taskin - 1/26] beat Bangladesh: 169/9 in 43 overs [Towhid - 51, Litton - 26 Fazalhaq - 3/24, Rashid - 2/21] by 17 runs (DLS method)

Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 17 runs (DLS method) in the first ODI of the three-match series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

The match was reduced to 43 overs after rain interrupted the proceedings, and 164 was the revised target for Afghanistan.

However, rain arrived again in the second innings, forcing an early conclusion to the match. Afghanistan remained ahead of the DL par score to win the first ODI.

Afghanistan restrict the hosts to a sub-par total

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Bangladesh had a slow start as they could only manage 48 runs for the loss of one wicket in the first ten overs. Left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi struck early and sent Tamim Iqbal inside the powerplay.

Following the powerplay, Litton Das tried to increase the scoring rate but soon gifted his wicket to Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Inform Najmul Shanto failed and could not make much of a difference either. The hosts were 84 for 3 in 15.1 overs when rain interrupted the play for the first time.

Azmatullah Omarzai removed Shakib Al Hasan soon after the play resumed as the veteran all-rounder had a scratchy stay in the middle. Rashid Khan took two quick wickets as the hosts were six down with only 128 on the board.

The Bangladesh innings never got going, failing to build any partnership in the middle, and posted 169 for 9 in 43 overs after the revised playing conditions. Towhid Hridoy was the only batter who looked untroubled and made a half-century.

Farooqi was the pick of the bowlers as he picked three wickets and gave away just 24 in his spell. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb also took two wickets each.

Chasing the revised target of 164, Afghanistan got off to a slow start as they were 32 for no loss at the end of the powerplay. The conditions were not easy to bat, but the Afghanistan openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, ensured they got through the new ball without losing a wicket.

Shakib Al Hasan drew the first blood, sending Gurbaz back after the powerplay. Taskin Ahmed came back into the attack and removed Rahmat Shah early. Meanwhile, Ibrahim, on the other hand, kept the scoreboard ticking with regular boundaries. Afghanistan were 83 for 2 in 21.4 overs when the rain interrupted again.

Since 20 overs were done, a result was possible. As per the DLS method, Afghanistan were 16 runs ahead as they needed to be 67 for two at the time when rain stopped the play. Eventually, the rain had the final say, and the visitors went 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series.
