Jonny Bairstow was seething with anger after he was run-out at Lord's
England batter, Joe Root, has stated that a sense of frustration has engulfed wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow after his controversial dismissal in the Lord’s Test by his Australian counterpart Alex Carey.
Bairstow primed for redemption at Headingley
According to the former England captain, Bairstow is determined to set the record straight when the two teams lock horns in the third Test at Headingley starting Thursday.
Root reckoned that Bairstow's reaction to the dismissal was far from positive, which is expected given the circumstances. Root believes that Bairstow thrives on such challenges and his emotions will be evident to all.
"You can bet your bottom dollar he will have the bit between his teeth. I don’t think he took it great. I don’t think anyone would, would they. He does thrive off things like this. You will be able to spot his mood a mile off," said Root while speaking to Daily Mail.
Virat brought best out of Jonny: Root
Root recalled an incident from the previous year at Edgbaston where Bairstow was provoked by someone, possibly Virat Kohli, and it resulted in the stumper delivering an exceptional performance. The 32-year-old expressed hope that a similar situation arises again that would trigger Bairstow's best form.
"Go back to Edgbaston last year. Someone said something to him – I think it was Virat Kohli – and it brought the best out of him. Let’s hope that happens again," added the Sheffield-born cricketer.
Kohli and Bairstow had engaged in verbal exchanges, and at the time, Bairstow was batting on 13 from 60 deliveries. The confrontation with Kohli seemed to have charged up Bairstow, who rapidly accelerated his scoring rate and went on to achieve his third consecutive Test century in just 119 balls.
The fifth-ranked batter in Tests further clarified that Bairstow’s actions were not aimed at gaining an unfair advantage. He opined that the 33-year-old was not attempting to take advantage and acknowledged that Bairstow felt unfairly treated in the situation. Root also cheekily remarked that none of the players will repeat such actions in the upcoming match at Headingley.
"Jonny was not trying to gain an advantage. So yes he felt hard done by. And I don’t think anyone will be leaving their crease here," stated the England veteran.
Root further emphasized the importance of controlling emotions and using them as motivation but in a controlled manner. He clarified that displaying emotions, particularly for players like Bairstow, can ignite their performance. However, the seasoned campaigner cautioned against becoming excessively engrossed in the intensity of the circumstances.
"So we have to use all the fuel but do it in a controlled manner. That doesn’t mean not to show any emotion because that might be how to get someone like Jonny going. But we mustn’t get too carried away with it all," concluded Root.
