England’s all-time highest run-scorers in international cricket feature a host of legendary names who have defined eras with the bat. From classic Test maestros to modern-day white-ball stars, this list reflects the depth of England’s batting history across formats.

Interestingly, current Test captain and premier all-rounder Ben Stokes, despite recently surpassing 11,000 international runs, is yet to break into the top 10. His absence highlights the extraordinary achievements of those who sit above him on this elite list.

5. Graham Gooch - 13190 Runs

Graham Gooch, one of England’s finest batters in history, ranks fifth on their all-time international run-scorers list. Making his England debut in 1975, the prolific run-getter played 243 matches across Tests and ODIs, amassing 13,190 runs at an impressive average of 40.58. Known for his resilience and dominance, Gooch struck 28 centuries and remains a towering figure in English cricket history.

4. Ian Bell - 13331 Runs

Ian Bell, renowned for his elegant stroke-play and technical brilliance, was one of the most stylish batters to grace the game. He made his England debut in 2004 and represented the side for 11 years, scoring 13,331 runs across all three formats. Bell sits fourth on England’s all-time run-scorers list, leaving behind a legacy of class, poise, and consistency.

3. Kevin Pietersen - 13779 Runs

Kevin Pietersen, one of England’s most dynamic and fearless batters, sits third on England's all-time run-scorers list with 13,779 runs across formats. He became the first English player to surpass Graham Gooch’s tally in 2013 and held the top spot until 2016. Pietersen's aggressive flair and match-winning ability made him a game-changer in modern English cricket.

2. Alastair Cook - 15737 Runs

Sir Alastair Cook, one of England’s finest ever Test batters, was a pillar of consistency and resilience at the top. The legendary opener became the first English player to cross 15,000 international runs in 2017, eventually finishing with 15,737. Now second on England’s all-time run-scorers list, Cook’s grit and longevity defined an era of English cricket.

1. Joe Root - 21428 Runs

Sitting proudly at the top is Joe Root, England’s all-time leading run-scorer with 21,428 international runs and counting. A modern-day maestro, who is also the second highest run-scorer in Test cricket, has redefined consistency and hunger at the crease like no one else in English cricket history. He surpassed Alastair Cook’s tally in 2021 and has since created a staggering lead, one that may remain untouched by any future English batter.

Note: It's worth noting that England’s next names on the all-time highest run-scorers list include Alec Stewart at number six with 13,140 runs, followed by white-ball icon Jos Buttler with 11,881, Jonny Bairstow with 11,581, David Gower with 11,401, and Andrew Strauss rounding off the top ten with 11,315.

Interestingly, Ben Stokes, who recently crossed 11,000 international runs during the Manchester Test against India, currently sits 11th on England’s all-time list. However, given his strong form and presence, he is well on course to break into the top 10 soon and further cement his legacy in English cricket history.
