Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has noted a significant dip in the bowling speeds of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ongoing fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Chopra pointed out that Bumrah is yet to bowl a single delivery in the match that has clocked over 140 kph.
Bumrah’s apparent drop in speed has also coincided with lesser success for the Indian fast bowler, considering he has managed to pick up just a solitary wicket against England so far after having bowled 28 overs. With England mounting 544-7 by the time of stumps on Day 3, the Indian team is already facing a deficit of 186 runs.
Chopra Blames Workload For Jasprit Bumrah’s Pace Drop
Aakash Chopra has compared Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling speeds in each match this series. The former Indian opener noted that while Bumrah bowled 40 percent of deliveries at 140 kph or more in Headingley, the same number dropped to 27 percent at Lord’s. Moreover, Bumrah has not delivered a single bowl exceeding the same in the ongoing Old Trafford Test so far.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, the cricketer-turned-commentator blamed Jasprit Bumrah’s excessive workload behind his speed dip. He said:
“If we look at Bumrah's speeds, he bowled 40 percent deliveries at 140 kph-plus at Headingley. By the time he went to Lord's, it became 27 percent, and at the Old Trafford ground, he hasn't bowled a single ball over 140 kph, and there was a slight injury scare as well with the second new ball. The bigger question is whether the workload will continue like this. The truth is that the speed is coming down. It was felt more in this match because the opposing team have already scored 544 runs. Bumrah's drop in speed is a real concern. I don't know why it's happening.”
Despite his dipping speeds with each passing Test, Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as one of the standout bowlers this series. He has picked up 13 wickets so far in just five innings at an average of 26.69, the best among players from both sides with more than 10 wickets to their names.
