Tim David bludgeoned his maiden international century, doing so in the third T20I of the five-match series against West Indies. Batting at number four for Australia in Basseterre, the cricketer muscled six fours and 11 huge sixes in his scintillating 37-ball 102*.
David also notched up the match-winning runs for Australia with a boundary in the 17th over of the game, as the visitors went 3-0 up in the series. Relishing his “childhood dream” of scoring a century for Australia after the match, the 29-year-old revealed that he played the innings with Andre Russell’s bat that he received a year ago.
Tim David Reflects “Foreign Territory” After Ton
Tim David, a veteran of 283 T20 games including 56 internationals, expressed his excitement after hitting his maiden century, calling it his childhood dream while playing for Australia. The cricketer added that while he does not play for records, achieving the feat was “definitely at the back” of his mind, and he is thankful of embracing that “foreign territory” in his career.
In a video shared by cricket.com.au after the match, Tim David said:
“I don’t play for records, but certainly I didn’t think I’d get the opportunity to score a hundred and, it is your childhood dream to score a hundred for Australia, so that was definitely at the back of my mind. The position I have been playing, I’ve played a lot of T20 matches now and, obviously I have never scored a hundred so it was a little bit of foreign territory for me for a little bit. I’m just really thankful.”
Tim David also explained his bat trade with West Indies legend Andre Russell from a year ago, considering the Australian cricketer brought up his century using the all-rounder’s bat. He said:
“I’ve actually been carrying it for about a year. I traded one with Andre Russell last year, and I have been carrying it for a while. I’ve used it a couple of times and it just felt right to use it in this series. If you get a chance to get your hands on someone’s bat like that, and he wanted one of mine so I was all for it.”
Tim David’s 37-ball blitz against West Indies marked the fastest-ever T20I century by any Australian in history, as he soared past Josh Inglis’ effort of 43 balls from a year ago. Moreover, David is currently ranked joint-second on the overall fastest centuries list in T20Is.
Tim David, along with the rest of his teammates, will now face West Indies in the fourth T20I on July 27.
