Legendary Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old has chosen Sri Lanka’s upcoming home Test against Bangladesh at the Galle International Stadium as his farewell match in the format.
A veteran of 118 Tests since his debut in 2009, Mathews played a key role in Sri Lanka securing some historic Test wins, including their series-winning performance in England back in 2014. Celebrating Angelo Mathews’ career, here is a look at some of the highest scores he has ever recorded with the bat in Test cricket.
5. 145* vs Bangladesh, 2022
In the series-deciding second Test match against Bangladesh in May 2022 in Mirpur, Angelo Mathews grinded out for 342 deliveries to smoke 145*. Belting 12 boundaries and two sixes in the process, Angelo’s innings, coupled with Dinesh Chandimal’s ton helped Sri Lanka mount 506 to go 141 runs ahead of Bangladesh.
Nonetheless, a ten-wicket match haul from fast bowler Asitha Fernando skittled Bangladesh for scores of 365 and 169 in both innings. With Sri Lanka winning the match by 10 wickets and claiming the series 1-0, the speedster won the ‘Player of the Match’ award but centurion Mathews took home the ‘Player of the Series’ laurels.
4. 157* vs Pakistan, 2013
Angelo Mathews plundered scores of 91 and 157* across two innings of the Abu Dhabi Test against Pakistan between December 31, 2013 and January 4, 2014. His 91-run effort helped a struggling Sri Lankan batting unit overcome a potential collapse by reaching 204.
Falling behind by 179 runs at the halfway stage, Mathews made 157*, his maiden 150-plus score in Tests, to fuel Sri Lanka’s fighting 480-5d in the second innings. Pakistan’s batting grit on the final day eventually prompted both sides to split the honors as the opening Test ended in a tame draw.
3. 160 vs England, 2014
Angelo Mathews delivered one of the all-round performances for the ages during Sri Lanka’s short Test trip of England back in June 2014. Whacking 26 runs in the first innings, the right-hander ransacked the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad with a regal 160 in the second innings to overcome Sri Lanka’s 108-run halfway deficit in style.
Moreover, Mathews also picked up four English wickets in the first innings, as Sri Lanka secured a thrilling 100-run win off the penultimate ball of the match on Day 5 to record a historic Test series triumph.
2. 199 vs Bangladesh, 2022
Angelo Mathews fell at the brink of recording his second double century, doing so in Chattogram against Bangladesh in May 2022. Composing 199 runs from 397 balls during his near 10-hour marathon stay at the crease, Mathews smeared 19 boundaries and a six before his slogging attempt went awry against hosts spinner Nayeem Hasan.
Nonetheless, Sri Lanka mounted 397 in their first innings and fell 68 runs short of Bangladesh at the halfway stage of the game. The match ended in a tame draw, with Angelo Mathews bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
1. 200 vs Zimbabwe, 2020
In the first Test of Sri Lanka’s two-match away series against Zimbabwe in January 2020, Angelo Mathews plundered the first double ton of his Test career. The cricketer notched up 200 unbeaten runs from 468 balls, lacing his innings with 16 fours and three huge sixes at the Harare Sports Club.
Batting at number four, Mathews crafted a 92-run stand with Kusal Mendis, 98 runs with Dhananjaya de Silva and 136 runs for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella to take Sri Lanka past 500. The seasoned all-rounder was fittingly adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ after his team romped to a comprehensive 10-wicket win.
