Since its inception in 2016, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has delivered an electrifying brand of cricket, often punctuated by high-scoring spectacles. While several teams have lit up the scoreboard over the years, the Nellai Super Kings group has emerged as one of the most dominant batting forces, featuring in three of the five highest team totals in tournament’s history.
Here, we take a look at five of the highest team totals ever recorded in the history of TNPL, ever since its inaugural edition back in 2016 up until the start of the 2025 season.
5. Nellai Royal Kings 209-3 vs Siechem Madurai Panthers, TNPL 2022
In match 10 of the TNPL 2022 season at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul, Nellai Royal Kings batted first and racked up 209-3 from 20 overs against Siechem Madurai Panthers. While opening batter Sri Neranjan led the early charge by cracking 47 from 27 balls, number four Sanjay Yadav top-scored in the innings with an explosive 70* off 42 deliveries with four fours and six huge sixes. Captain Baba Indrajith also smeared an unbeaten 18-ball 34* to serve the slog-overs impetus with Yadav.
Nellai Royal Kings ended up winning the match by 26 runs despite Arun Karthik’s fighting 106 from 57 balls in the run-chase.
4. Nellai Royal Kings 211-6 vs Siechem Madurai Panthers, TNPL 2023
Nellai Royal Kings, under the leadership of Arun Karthik, pipped Siechem Madurai Panthers by four runs in a high-scoring TNPL 2023 thriller in the Eliminator at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground. Batting first, middle-order batters Guruswamy Ajitesh (50 off 30) and Nidhish Rajagopal (76 off 50) smeared cracking half-centuries, while belligerent wicketkeeper-batter Rithik Easwaran belted 29 from just 10 balls with three fours and a couple of sixes as Nellai scaled 211-6 off 20 overs, one of the highest totals in TNPL history.
3. Albert TUTI Patriots 215-2 vs Chepauk Super Gillies, TNPL 2016
The inaugural edition of the TNPL came to a cracking conclusion back in September 2016 at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, with Albert TUTI Patriots mounting 215-2 from 20 overs upon batting first. Both openers, Kaushik Gandhi and Abhinav Mukund unleashed blistering half-centuries, with the latter of the two top-scoring with 82* off 52 balls. Captain and seasoned wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik also slogged his way to a six-laden 26-ball 55 against the likes of Sai Kishore and then-IPL star Yo Mahesh.
2. Chepauk Super Gillies 217-5 vs Salem Spartans, TNPL 2023
Batting first at the SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore in the second match of the TNPL 2023 season, Chepauk Super Gillies carted 217-5 from 20 overs. Opening batter Pradosh Ranjan Paul shared attacking 50-plus partnerships with captain Narayan Jagadeesan and number three Baba Aparajith to clatter 88 runs off 55 balls with 12 fours and a six. Sanjay Yadav at number four landed the knockout punch on the Salem Spartans bowlers with an unbeaten 12-ball 31* as Jagadeesan’s troops recorded one of the highest totals in TNPL history.
Pradosh Ranjan fittingly bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award after Chepauk Super Gillies edged out Salem Spartans by 52 runs.
1. Nellai Royal Kings 236-2 vs Ruby Trichy Warriors, TNPL 2022
Sanjay Yadav launched an all-out assault on Ruby Trichy Warriors bowlers around the midway stage of the TNPL 2022 season at Coimbatore’s SNR College Cricket Ground. Batting at number four for the Nellai Royal Kings, Sanjay blasted six fours and nine huge sixes to tonk an unbeaten 55-ball 103*. Forming forces with Baba Aparajith at 29-2, the two cricketers shared an explosive 207-run unbroken partnership for the third wicket as the Nellai Royal Kings scaled a monumental 236-2 from 20 overs.
Aparajith himself unleashed 92* runs from just 48 balls with five boundaries and eight maximums as Nellai mounted TNPL’s highest total in history.
